Hurricanes and Motivation

July 6th, 2008 at 10:16 pm (Self Improvement Tips + More)

It is amazing sometimes how many people cannot find the motivation to do the things they need to do in their daily lives. Yet, when a major catastrophic hurricane comes along they seem to find the motivation to get out of the way and get out of town during the mandatory evacuation. If someone had that sort of motivation in their lives and took things more seriously that they do perhaps they would have a reason to propel themselves forward and achieve their goals.

A hurricane is a very motivating factor indeed. In fact hurricane Katrina motivated the President of the United States to fly back to Washington and the United States Congress to standard $200 billion to repair the Gulf Coast of the United States of America. After seeing the destruction in New Orleans when the levees broke from hurricane Katrina it has motivated us to build the levies stronger when we should have done it all along.

Had we had significant motivation prior to this to monitor and make sure that those levees were secure, safe and super strong they may not have broken in the first place. Hurricanes can be a very motivating factor indeed.

Next time you are having trouble finding motivation in one of your daily endeavors or projects perhaps you’ll consider this 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season and the motivation it provides people to do something and tap into that if you want to accomplish your objectives. Please consider this 2006.

Power of Vision and Imagination

June 15th, 2008 at 10:32 am (Self Improvement Tips + More)

Philosophically, the mind is the human consciousness that originates in the brain and is manifested especially in thought, perception, emotion, will, memory, and imagination.

The mind has two compartments:

the conscious mind and,
the subconscious mind

The conscious mind is the area of your mind that you are most familiar with. It includes images, thoughts, impressions, sounds etc. the subconscious mind contains all of your memories, beliefs, fears, defenses, and biases. All impressions in their entirety from the moment of birth are stored in this part of the mind. This collective accumulation of perceptions, programming, and conditioning directly influences who you are and what you become.

The subconscious mind rules our lives. Imagination is the language of the subconscious. The mind of a man does not differentiate between reality and imagination. Subconscious thinking must be aligned with conscious desires in order to reach your goal.

There is a function the mind plays in the journey towards success in life. To undervalue the place of the mind is to switch off the source of inspiration through which ideas are generated. The mind is the workshop for creativity. If it power is properly utilized, it has the ability to browse through the subconscious and bring dormant potentials to your knowledge and activate the conscious on what to do. God acknowledging the power of the mind affirmed at Babel that nothing shall be impossible unto man which he has imagined to do.

According to Napoleon Hill, whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve, hence no dream or vision can be conceived or generated without the platform of the mind. The mind as the power house of the body releases internal energy which has a compelling force to see to the actualization of your vision. The law of success says what you see is what you get. The quality of your life cannot be better than the quality of your thoughts. A man is therefore a product of how he thinks, for as he thinketh in his heart (mind) so is he. If you think success so you are, he can who thinks he can, he cant who thinks he cant. If you think failure, poverty, defeat so you are.

The journey from mediocrity to stardom begins with a change of mindset. You cannot travel without if you had not traveled within. The prodigal son remained in penury and hunger until he exercised the power of his mind. In biblical account it was recorded that “he came to himself”. This implies that before now he was not himself, his human reasoning and faculty of imagination had been suppressed by his circumstances, but when he looked inwards, he engaged the mind in a discussion that brought about a change in the bearing of his life. There can be no change of reproach until there is a change of approach. Spend time in dreaming and exploring the power of the mind until your visions become true.

Today’s dreams are the realities of tomorrow. You can sharpen your vision by exploring the power of the mind to renew and make your dream clearer. Whatever God has placed in your mind, it is because you can achieve it; get your mind renewed to be able to accommodate the big picture. Moses sent twelve spies to search the Promised Land ahead of the people of God. Ten of them came back with evil report; they did not have the capacity to comprehend and interprete what God said with what they saw. They exaggerated the inhabitants of the land and made caricature of God’s word in their minds, so they could not enter in because of unbelief. There is need for us to position our minds aright so that the vision of tomorrow will not be aborted at the altar of unbelief. Success is from the inside out; from within are the issues of life. YOUR MIND IS YOUR GREATEST ASSET.

Do I have What It takes?

June 12th, 2008 at 2:14 pm (Self Improvement Tips + More)

What am I made of? Do I have what it takes? I want to succeed, can I do it?

Let us attempt to answer your question, if you are willing to listen.

I don’t know you, but you tell me? So you have what it takes? Everyone wants to succeed, can you make the grade? What are you made of? Why should you care? Is it worth finding out? Well, it is interesting you ask this question. I myself have had to ask this question many times. Therefore I feel it appropriate for me to answer and assist you. And thank you for asking, because this is the first step in understanding self. Here is you answer to your question, what am I made? How can I find out?

It comes to others at different times in their lives. If you really want to know there are only a few ways. But all those ways require you pushing yourself to your limits. I myself was able to find out in athletic type activities, later in games of skill, racing, flying, politics and business. If you ever discuss this with a mountain climber, marathoner, entrepreneur, soldier after a battle, politician, student finishing their PhD paper; they will be able to tell you better than anyone else. You can experience these things through many events.

I have talked to actors, debate students, chess champions, card players, leaders, heroes, Olympic medallists, fighter pilots, corporate titans and pro golfers, tennis players, fishermen, football players, soccer players, baseball players, etc. Depending on your sphere of experiences you will find many people of young ages who can tell you the answer as they push themselves on skateboards, debate class, making the football team, surviving the most recent relationship that week or even achieving the grade or parental acceptance. The trick is when you experience these things to realize their value. In my life I have tried to cross raging rivers, run marathons, worked to beat a personal best in track, rode a bicycle from Oregon to Mexico, run in an election, took 33 units in one semester at two different colleges in at one time, climbed mountains, grown a business and many other things.

The more things you do the more strength of character you will feel and the stronger the self. This is important to your healthy consciousness and mental condition. I will not attempt to pretend I am an expert of motivation, but as most people listed above, I like you am the greatest motivator of myself. When you are crossing a river or swimming across an open channel of ocean, climbing a mountain, running a marathon, riding a bike over 200 miles in one sitting, lots goes though your mind. You then will look inside to ask yourself;

“How tough am I?”

“Can I do this?”

“Do I have what it takes?”

It is similar to the little train which said in the story; I think I can, I think I can. Some people will ask God to help them find the strength to accomplish whatever it is they attempt. Either way it is during these times of self induced adversity or times of battle, that you can determine the answer to your question. A person who pushes him or herself again and again can develop an incredible strength of character. People like Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Arnold Swarznegger, Magic Johnson, Wayne Gretsky in sports can tell you this along with the former sports stars who later become motivators and teachers like Vince Lombardi who has the famous quote:

“WHAT IT TAKES TO BE NUMBER 1″

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that’s first place. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in everything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win. It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That’s why they are there - - to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The objective is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules - - but to win. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour - - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he’s exhausted on the field of battle - - victorious.”

Vincent Lombardi

———-

Beating the odds, over coming adversity, adapting to any situation and having the strength of character to never give up is an incredible tool for your self and your mind, but it does not come for free. If you possess such talents, vision, commitment, dedication and perseverance then you are an incredible asset to this country, your family and too the world. There are few who possess such levels of strength of character. If you have it you will know it. And to others, who have it they will recognize it almost instinctively if you have it. For you now share a common bond with the best of the species. It is a sense of presence that you have in your step, in your speech, in your breath. As you reach higher and higher levels, you will find fewer and fewer who possess these levels. It is important that we notice these traits in others and allow those who are in need of getting to the next level our expertise.

The question do you have what it takes cannot be answered by me or anyone else except you and it can only be answered during or right after such incredible achievement at that time and place. If you really want to know the answer you have to take some risks and go for it. Whatever “It” is not as important as what you are about.

The greatest traits of such individuals seeking to develop themselves are Perseverance and the realization that you cannot give up.

Winston Churchill said;

“Never, ever, ever, ever, ever give up.”

If you will remember the movie “Gatica” the so-called genetically inferior brother out swam the superior genetically made sibling, who could not make it back to shore. He did not have the drive or will. How could this happen? Well, because he had not developed what we are talking about here. Remember Rocky against the Russian super body boxer? Same thing.

Calvin Coolidge said about perseverance;

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

If you have seen movies such as Karate Kid, St. Elmos Fire, Vision Quest, etc. capture our sense of self and determination. Movies like “Ants, Matrix, etc also are so well liked by audiences because of their underlining themes of self, self determination and strength of character against the odds, challenges and world, even mother nature. This is why surfers, mountain climbers, marathoners, pilots, sail boaters, etc. often have a deeper sense of their abilities and the power of nature and their strength to meet those incredible forces. When on top of a mountain you have just climbed or half way through crossing a river or channel or in the middle of a marathon, it is as if the mountain, Earth or water is asking you, okay so who are you? Who are you to challenge these forces? What makes you think you can perform? What makes you think you can do this? What do you stand for? Who are you? Are you sure you can do this, why are you doing this?

It is at that point you will reach a sense of self and you will be able to answer your question. The more you do this the stronger your strength of character will be and the more reality based you will become in your ability to predict your limits, test those limits, expand those limits and achieve more for yourself, your family, your country, your race and children of the world. While others are living in fear, embroiled in contrived controversy to keep the natives restless and under control, you will be able to tower above it all, accepting any challenge, reject defeat and become victorious in what you seek. It is not as difficult as you might think. Truly there is nothing that you cannot do. There is nothing that is impossible. No one can get you to believe you are a failure without you expressed consent. As long as you have earned and believe through experience that you have what it takes, then you do. If your experiences have yet to bring you to this point you have not experienced all you can or challenged yourself enough.

I remember once visiting a toastmasters club meeting and I thought that I could use some help in public speaking, yet once there I could see that I was needed as an instructor not a student, thus I taught and looked for someone more experienced to teach me for my own needs and for those I returned the favor. If you wish to master a line of thought, skill, talent and better yourself. You must work hard, be disciplined and never give up. You will soon find what you are looking for. I no longer have such questions, but I see others do. Once you have reached this point or if you believe you are about to attempt to. Go ahead and email me. I would rather associate with winners, like you.

Coaching: Don’t Offer Complimentary Calls If You Want To Be Successful

May 16th, 2008 at 3:34 am (Self Improvement Tips + More)

When I began my coaching practice a few years ago it was recommended to me that I could attract new clients by offering complimentary i.e. free coaching sessions.

At first this seemed like a good idea as it would give me some exposure and make it easy for clients to begin to get to know me and how I worked.

After a while I began to realize that there were major problems with this strategy and that it required a measure of courage to change my approach to this issue.

The problems were as follows:

1. Many clients never made use of this offer.

2. Those who did rarely would sign on for paid sessions.

3. When they did sign on it seemed that they often had an issue with being able to afford my rates.

4. The clients who did sign on were generally less motivated to make measurable changes in their lives than the ideal clients I was looking for.

So where did this leave me? Well both frustrated and scratching my head. I began to wonder whether coaching was even a viable profession and began to consider leaving it when I remembered how I met my current wife.

I recalled that after ending a significantly bad relationship that I started years ago when I was too naive to know better I decided to create a definite image (by “image” here I mean not simply appearance rather qualities of character, integrity, responsibility etc.) of the type of woman I wanted to meet the next time.

I then vowed to myself that I would not precipitously jump into a new relationship unless it was the one I was looking for.

I must say that at first the waiting was not easy as it took over 5 years before I met my new partner. However when we did meet I knew she was the one for me and we have been happy ever since i.e. over 11 years now and counting.

Additionally I had spared myself any untoward agony, and loss of energy, money and time that I would have incurred had I been too desperate or impulsive during that period.

This simple rule:

Know what you want and wait for it patiently!

Is what I then chose to apply to my coaching practice.

I knew deep in my heart that what I was offering to others had great value. All I had to do was to begin to make that known to those people I wished to work with. Everything else would take care of itself.

My description of such people is as follows:

1. They are motivated.

2. They are willing to pay me a substantial consultation and/or sessional fee fixed by me up front.

3. They are responsible and of high integrity.

4. They never give up on themselves.

5. They resonate with the work I am doing and also feel it to be valuable.

In my view these are the only clients that I feel will benefit from the work I do.

Others will not, pure and simple and so I protect my time and energy from being consumed by them.

If you are a coach offering complimentary sessions I ask you to consider what kinds of clients you are attracting and how happy you are with this group? They will never make you successful and will likely only frustrate you. I think you already know what I’m talking about don’t you?

What Is Failing Forward?

April 27th, 2008 at 10:14 am (Self Improvement Tips + More)

What an absurd statement! Absurd or not, progress is not possible without failure. It is part of being an evolving and growing human being.

Failing forward is about leveraging mistakes; making a realistic assessment of risks and the ability to live with the downside and experiment with new approaches. FAILING FORWARD is an investment in human success.

Look at it this way:

1. Failing forward is really about achievement as a series of trial and error opportunities.

2. You, as a person, are not a failure. Failure is a state of mind.

3. You are not a vicim. Take responsibility for what you can control and into a position of power.

4. You can control how you let a trauma affect you.

5. The present is the only place real opportunity exists and where you can take action.

6. Lettting go of limiting beliefs may be hard on the ego, but your ability to move forward will increase dramatically.

7. When you have a vision, you have a view that puts failure in its proper perspective.

8. There is always uncertainty when you try something new.

9. You can’t make significant progress by doing it all yourself. Let your environment and network do some of the work.

10. Often, the only difference between success and failure, is simple persistence.

11. Knowing when to let go and try something else is important. Failing forward is about getting up and moving on.
