New Device from 3 Allows Users to Connect to Internet While Driving

April 28th, 2010 at 4:51 am (Buyers Guides, House Of Telecommunication, Technology Portal)

The latest device that was released by 3 in the Gadget Show Live, which was recently held in Birmingham, would allow users to connect to internet even when they are travelling in their cars.

UK’s mobile broadband provider, 3 has released a device that would allow creation of personal hotspot throughout the vehicle. It can be used to connect various devices such as iPads, netbooks, gaming devices and iPods to internet simultaneously.

This gadget is based on MiFi, another gadget from 3 that allowed creation of a personal Wi-Fi hotspot. The users could connect many different gadgets to internet through one mobile broadband connection by using this device.

The Head of Internet Services of 3, David Kerrigan announced that the recent surveys by them had found that one-fourth of the people would prefer having internet in their cars, especially families and those who travel to work with others. These results are not conclusive, as many surveys have produced exactly opposite results.

A research undertaken by Infonetics showed that the purchase of mobile broadband devices (see dongles for laptops) has increased by more than 50% last year as compared to the year before that. However, the purchase of personal hotspots such as MiFi has actually decreased by 28%.

The price of the latest in-car hotspot package from 3 is £59.99. The items that are included are the in-car version of the MiFi modem, mains as well as car charger and 1GB space for data. Whether the device is value for money or not depends on how much you like internet over on-road games with family and friends.

How to Get Dial up Internet Access

March 12th, 2010 at 2:49 pm (House Of Telecommunication, Technology Portal)

The Internet has evolved from a network used by governments and large businesses to an everyday service used by millions of people around the globe. But not everyone using the Internet has a need for high speed access. A dial up internet connection is a cost-effective solution for many users.

Dial up Internet has been almost completely replaced with broadband alternatives like Wi-Fi, DSL, and cable Internet. Despite its dwindling popularity, dial up access still remains available to almost anyone with a phone line, computer and modem. Dial up can still be used to accomplish many tasks, such as sending and receiving email messages, chatting with friends on instant messenger programs, or doing online banking. A dial up connection can also be a great backup should one’s broadband internet access fail for any reason.

All computers built within the last decade are able to connect to the Internet, so you don’t need a top of the line machine to connect. You only need to make sure that your computer is equipped with a dial up modem, a device that translates the digital signals from the computer into sound waves that travel along phone lines. Most computers come with one already built in.

You also need a regular phone line in your home. Dial up Internet will not work with a cell phone. The modem occupies the phone line when you are connected to the Internet, so you won’t be able to talk on the phone and be online at the same time.

Most Internet companies have shifted their focus to providing high speed access, but many still offer dial up accounts.

If you only plan to use the Internet a few hours each month, there are companies which provide free dial up Internet.

Another aspect of dial up Internet that is important to consider is the availability of local access numbers. When you connect to the Internet, your modem will place a call to an access number to initiate the connection. The phone call will stay active for as long as you are connected to the Internet. If you live in a major city, this will not be much of an issue for you. But those residing in smaller towns or rural areas should first take care that their Internet providers have a local access number for their area. Otherwise, long distance charges may apply every time a connection to the internet is made.

Once you have access via dial up, you can learn how to connect to dial up Internet here.

Attack on Google China Operations May Have Had Inside Help

February 2nd, 2010 at 4:39 am (Buyers Guides, House Of Telecommunication, Technology Portal)

Google has reiterated its dissatisfaction with continuing operations in China following a massive cyber attack which was discovered to have originated from here. The attack compromised the email ids and privacy of some Google customers.

The search engine has made public its investigations into the mid-December attack which exposed its vulnerability in some areas. The well planned and focused attack was aimed at gaining access to the sensitive data of Chinese human rights activists, Google revealed. It has also said that some 20 other companies in internet, chemical, fiancé and other sectors have also been under attack. Suitable caution has been issued to these companies.

Another alarming fact that came to light during the course of investigations is that some Google employees based in its China operations may have some complicity in the cyber attack. According to new agencies the popular search engine has doubts about some of its employees here. While some have been asked to take a leave of absence, others have been moved to other offices while yet others were denied access to internal networks.

As investigations continue to explore what really happened, Google top bosses have made it crystal clear that continuing in China in midst of such non conducive climate is hardly a necessity for search engine. Only 2% of Google’s total revenue comes from its Chinese operations.

In an official statement, David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, had stated that they will no longer operate the uncensored version of Google which was being made available here so far. In view of the recent happenings, this will be withdrawn in favour of the unfiltered version. The Chinese government is likely to object to this version, in which case, Google is quite willing to suspend operations in China.

If you are concerned about internet safety or just the safety of your download limits look at Broadband Genie for information on broadband internet, or the broadband providers. There are useful broadband reviews and it is worth a look at the website for the comparative table of broadband UK providers, which includes an analysis of their products and services.

TalkTalk & Sky Make Suggestions on BT Broadband Plan

January 14th, 2010 at 7:28 am (Buyers Guides, House Of Telecommunication, Technology Portal)

In accordance with their interest in the £1.5bn superfast broadband network of BT, providers Carphone Warehouse and Sky have been seeking improvements in the efficacy of the plan. It is notable that Carphone and Sky are only two out of a huge number of prospective customers for BT’s new fibre optic network.

The new wholesale broadband plan of BT is aimed at providing customers with a new high-speed network that will enable them to download at a speed ten times faster than the current speeds. No wholesale deal with operators has been finalised yet.

Dougal Scott, Sky’s deputy head of strategy, talked about the interest of his company in the plans and pointed out that BT will need to work harder on attracting the potential partners by bringing in suggested improvements in their products.

Right now, neither Sky nor TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse) are sure about the capability of BT’s network to fulfil the needs of different providers who will be competing with each other. According to Charles Dunstone, Carphone’s chief executive, the present form of Openreach product is not so acceptable/marketable, as it does not reflect adequate flexibility.

The claim of Dunstone was countered by a BT spokesperson, who pointed out that Openreach is quite confident about the performance and reliability of its product after conducting a successful pilot. He added that BT would be willing to bring in more flexibility and innovation depending upon popular demand for its product.

It is also worth noting that BT is determined to bring out the high-speed network by 2012 instead of 2013 as was planned. This would be right in time for the mega event of London Olympics.

For information on your ISP and corresponding broadband speed, try using the broadband check from Broadband Genie to get a snapshot of your current download and upload speeds. It is a good site to compare BT Broadband prices and service with Virgin Media Broadband and the other top internet service providers such as O2 Broadband.
