Tea discovered in 2700 BC by Chinese emperor Shen Nung has come a long way since then. What was the leaf of a wild bush is today the main ingredient of the choicest beverage of high society. Today, thousands earn their living through the production and trade of tea leaves. In fact, the processing of tea leaves in different ways itself has become an art, so that each variety has its own unique taste and aroma. So how many varieties of tea are there?

Well, the answer to that question is uncountable! Yet, it is possible to classify tea into a few broad categories. These tea varieties are the ones which are the most popular ones in the market today. The most important one is Black Tea. Also known as Red Tea in certain parts of the world, this is the tea which is grown mainly in India and Sri Lanka. Recently, production of this variety has also started in a few countries of Africa like Kenya and Zimbabwe. These tea leaves are allowed to oxide completely, turning them nearly black in color, hence the name. Tea has become a very popular drink in many counties around the world with the years that passed, and it is also one of the only drinks to be so heavily involved with historical events.
