Attack on Google China Operations May Have Had Inside Help

Google has reiterated its dissatisfaction with continuing operations in China following a massive cyber attack which was discovered to have originated from here. The attack compromised the email ids and privacy of some Google customers.

The search engine has made public its investigations into the mid-December attack which exposed its vulnerability in some areas. The well planned and focused attack was aimed at gaining access to the sensitive data of Chinese human rights activists, Google revealed. It has also said that some 20 other companies in internet, chemical, fiancé and other sectors have also been under attack. Suitable caution has been issued to these companies.

Another alarming fact that came to light during the course of investigations is that some Google employees based in its China operations may have some complicity in the cyber attack. According to new agencies the popular search engine has doubts about some of its employees here. While some have been asked to take a leave of absence, others have been moved to other offices while yet others were denied access to internal networks.

As investigations continue to explore what really happened, Google top bosses have made it crystal clear that continuing in China in midst of such non conducive climate is hardly a necessity for search engine. Only 2% of Google’s total revenue comes from its Chinese operations.

In an official statement, David Drummond, SVP, Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, had stated that they will no longer operate the uncensored version of Google which was being made available here so far. In view of the recent happenings, this will be withdrawn in favour of the unfiltered version. The Chinese government is likely to object to this version, in which case, Google is quite willing to suspend operations in China.
